Assessing in the Lifelong Learning Sector


These qualifications are for anyone who assesses learners in a work and / or classroom-based environment.

There are three units that can be completed. These units combine to form four different assessing qualifications. Please contact us if you are unsure which qualification you need to undertake.

There are no pre-requisite qualifications, however, you must have access to your own learners within a centre and / or workplace, who you can assess to generate evidence for achievement of the qualification. You should also meet the appropriate occupational competence requirements for the qualification(s) you are assessing.

The units available are:-

Unit 1: Understanding the principles and practices of assessment

This unit covers the background knowledge necessary for assessors, including types of assessment, planning, making assessment decisions, understanding quality assurance and managing assessment information. Assessment is by completion of written questions.

Unit 2: Assess occupational competence in the work environment

This unit is about carrying out assessments of occupational competence in a work environment.  To complete this unit, you must assess learners undertaking an NVQ. You have to demonstrate that you can plan assessments, make assessment decisions, provide information and show legal and good practice requirements when assessing. Assessment is by completion of a portfolio of evidence of your assessing, plus an observation of you completing assessments.

Unit 3: Assess vocational skills, knowledge and understanding

This unit is about carrying out assessments of vocational skills, knowledge and understanding outside of a work environment. You have to demonstrate that you can preparedness carry out assessments, provide information and show legal and good practice requirements when assessing. Assessment is by completion of a portfolio of evidence of assessing learner work, plus an observation of you completing assessments.

Qualifications available:-

Level 3 Award in Understanding the Principles and Practices of Assessment (£150)

(Unit 1 only)

Level 3 Award in Assessing Competence in the Work Environment (£225)

(Units 1 and 2)

Level 3 Award in Assessing Vocationally Related Achievement (£225)

(Units 1 and 3)

Level 3 Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement (£300)

(Units 1, 2 and 3)

Achievement of these qualifications could lead to gaining employment as an assessor in a workplace or educational environment. You could also progress to a Level 4 qualification in Internal Quality Assurance.

Cost includes registration, course text book, face to face tuition and assessment support as needed, access to YMCA Awards e-learning, support and guidance via email / telephone throughout the course, assessment and certificate.

Internal Quality Assurance qualifications

These qualifications are aimed at individuals who are directly involved in the internally quality assurance of assessors and assessment.

There are three units that can be completed. These units combine to form three different IQA qualifications. Please contact us if you are unsure which qualification you need to undertake.

There are no pre-requisite qualifications, however, you must have access to assessors within a centre and / or workplace, who you can monitor to generate evidence for achievement of the qualification. You should also meet the appropriate occupational competence requirements for the qualification(s) you are working with.

The units available are:-

Unit 4 Understanding the principles and practices of internally assuring the quality of assessment

This unit covers the background knowledge necessary for IQA staff, including how to plan IQA, techniques for monitoring the quality of assessment, how to improve assessment quality. Assessment is by completion of written questions.

Unit 5 Internally assure the quality of assessment

This unit is about carrying out Internal Quality Assurance work with assessors. You have to demonstrate that you can plan, internally evaluate, maintain and improve IQA of assessment. Assessment is by completion of a portfolio of evidence of conducting IQA of assessors and assessment.

Unit 8 Plan, allocate and monitor work in own area of responsibility

This unit is for those who lead teams of assessors and have to plan for IQA within a centre or workplace. You must demonstrate that you can plan, allocate and monitor the work of assessors. Assessment is by completion of a portfolio of evidence of IQA work.

Level 4 Award in Understanding the Internal Quality Assurance of Assessment Processes and Practice (£150)

(Unit 4 only)

Level 4 Award in Internal Quality Assurance of Assessment Processes and Practice (£225)

(Units 4 and 5)

Level 4 Certificate in Leading the Internal Quality Assurance of Assessment Processes and Practice (£300)

(Units 4, 5 and 8)

Achievement of these qualifications could lead to gaining employment as an IQA in a workplace or educational environment. You could also progress to a qualification in External Quality Assurance.
