The Level 2 Certificate in Fitness Instructing is your ideal starting point for a career in the fitness industry.
In order to do this course, you should have a good level of English and must have an interest in fitness and exercise. Experience of using a gym, or articipating in aerobics classes would be advantageous.
The course is split into two parts – theory and practical.
The theory part includes four different modules:-
- Anatomy and Physiology – covering the skeletal system, muscles, circulatory system, respiratory system, nervous system and energy systems – assessment by a multi-choice exam
- Principles of exercise, fitness and health – covering components of fitness, training methods, training effects, basic exercise nutrition – assessment by multi-choice exam
- Health, safety and welfare – looking at all aspects of safety in a fitness environment, including risk assessments, safeguarding and legal requirements – assessment by completion of worksheets
- Supporting clients – how to work with clients in a fitness environment, including customer service, meeting client needs and how to motivate clients – assessment by completion of worksheets
You then complete practical work, depending on the area you wish to instruct – gym-based exercise or exercise to music.
In this part, you study how to plan, instruct and evaluate gym-based exercise sessions.
You will learn how to use a variety of equipment in the gym, including CV machines, resistance machines (fixed weights) and free weights, looking at techniques for each exercise and how to instruct someone how to use it. You will also learn how to structure an exercise session – warm-up, main activities and cool-down – including pre and post exercise stretches, and how to write instructing plans.
You are assessed by completion of a series of worksheets and by observation of your practical instructing, both on the course and in a final practical assessment, during which you teach a session of 30-45 minutes with a client.
Achievement of the Level 2 Certificate in Fitness Instructing (Gym-based Exercise) will allow you to work in a gym as a general instructor. You could also progress to the Level 3 Certificate in Personal Training, or complete other level 2 practical modules, such as teaching exercise to children or circuit training.
Exercise to music
In this part, you study how to plan, instruct and evaluate exercise to music sessions.
You will learn how to instruct different aspects of exercise to music, including a warm-up, aerobics, body conditioning and cool-down. This will include:-
How to work with music – following the beats and phrases, selecting appropriate music Choreography – how to write routines and break them down to teach them, different moves that can be used.
Teaching skills – planning, cueing, communication, positioning, methods of teaching.
You are assessed by completion of a series of worksheets and by observation of your practical instructing, both during the course and in a final practical assessment, in which you teach an exercise class of approximately 30minutes to a group of 6-12 people.
Achievement of the Level 2 Certificate in Fitness Instructing (Exercise to Music) allows you to teach your own exercise classes. This could be for a gym or leisure centre or as a self-employed instructor. You could also undertake other level 2 modules to expand your knowledge and skills, such as gym-based exercise, or water-based exercise.
